IMBA Professional Development Credits

The Independent Mortgage Brokers Association of Ontario (IMBA) is a volunteer-based organization of independent mortgage financing professionals. IMBA exists to advance the mortgage brokerage industry on behalf of its Members through public advocacy, to participate in consultative processes with regulators and other industry participants, and to generally assist its Members with their businesses. Members of the Association are required to meet professional standards as a condition of membership.

IMBA counts approximately 1,600 Members, which represent more than 300 companies throughout Ontario. The Association’s membership is comprised of representatives from various mortgage-related industries, including mortgage brokers and agents, lenders, title insurers, appraisers, lawyers and real estate professionals.

Members are continuously kept informed about the latest industry advancements, products, trends, regulatory matters, and related services. Members receive information either through communication pieces, professional development conferences, seminars, or other events.

The Certified Professional Mortgage Broker (CPMB) is a professional designation that can be attained by individuals who are either qualified to be, or are Mortgage Brokers in Ontario. IMBA has created the designation to raise the standards of professionalism within the mortgage brokerage industry in the province. The CPMB is exclusive to Mortgage Brokers or individuals who are qualified to be Mortgage Brokers. No other industry participant will be entitled to earn this certification.

The Certified Professional Mortgage Agent (CPMA) is a professional designation that can be attained by individuals who are Mortgage Agents in Ontario.IMBA has created the designation to raise the standards of professionalism within the mortgage brokerage industry in the province. A Mortgage Agent can demonstrate his or her commitment to professional development and standards by achieving this certification. The CPMA is exclusive to Mortgage Agents. No other mortgage industry participant will be entitled to earn this certification.

CPMB & CPMA certifications are renewable every 2 years and will require you to demonstrate a commitment to continuous education along with maintaining professional standards within the mortgage brokerage industry.

Shut the Door on Fraud -- 2 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for industry professionals seeking to avoid participating in mortgage fraud. It examines the impact of identity theft and mortgage fraud on the industry, as well as the latest Canadian fraud scams. It offers strategies to protect individuals and employers from mortgage fraud and shows how to detect fraud before a mortgage is advanced. Grow operations, methamphetamine labs and resources to help avoid participating in mortgage fraud are covered.

Condition Fulfillment -- 1 PD credit

This session is designed for new lenders and brokers. It explains how to complete the appropriate verifications to increase the probability of preventing fraud and highlights warning flags to watch for in a mortgage application. It also provides information on what to do if fraud is suspected and outlines steps to take prior to funding to reduce the possibility of fraud.

Marketing Ideas -- 2 hours - ½ PD credit per hour

This half-day session provides marketing ideas for brokers and mortgage representatives new to the industry. It may also be considered a refresher on how to develop more business.

Underwriting 101 -- 2 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for new lenders and brokers. It covers the basics of underwriting such as risk evaluation for property, loan characteristics and borrower risk. The concepts of incremental and overall underwriting risk are also covered.

Understanding Appraisals -- 2 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for lenders and brokers looking to gain an understanding of how real estate is appraised. It reviews the different types of appraisal reports, demonstrates the various types of appraisals and highlights key indicators to look for in a full appraisal report.

Understanding Credit Reports -- 2 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for lenders and brokers who want to understand how to interpret and select the right customers by reviewing credit reports and credit risk scores. With permission from Equifax, this seminar thoroughly examines each section of a credit report and a job aid is provided as a take away.

Underwriting Business for Self -- 3 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for lenders and brokers with an underwriting background. It provides an overview of the analysis required to assess the self-employed borrower's ability to repay and the long-term reliability of the income. Part I covers the components of financial statements and reviews some of the common types of analysis and ratios used to assess the financial stability and viability of an actual company. Part II examines the underwriting guidelines relative to self-employed applicants. It defines self-employment and explores ways to verify self-employment income and calculate the GDS/TDS ratios for these types of applications.

Technology Workshop -- 3 PD credits

This hands-on half-day session helps participants learn to use Microsoft Outlook. It covers the basics of using e-mail and provides strategies for e-mail marketing. Also included is an overview of Outlook's contact management function to assist with marketing to customers. A brief segment explains how to use Microsoft Word to create labels for marketing.

Powerful Presentation Skills (half-day session) - 3 PD credits

This half-day session is designed for mortgage industry professionals who have to periodically develop and deliver presentations. It provides an overview of planning for and delivering a successful meeting or presentation.

Powerful Presentation Skills (full day session) - 5 PD credits

This one-day session is designed for mortgage industry professionals who have to develop and deliver presentations. It focuses in detail on planning for and delivering a successful meeting or presentation. It involves the following four stages of work and provides participants with hands-on activities and practical suggestions for each stage:

  1. Preparing for your presentation
  2. Starting your presentation effectively
  3. Presenting and interacting with your audience
  4. Ensuring a perfect end to your presentation where prospects are informed and satisfied that you are their best option

Networking Skills - (half day workshop) - 3 PD credits

This half-day session is designed to help participants learn how to build and maintain relationships with potential contacts who can help them grow their business. It focuses on distinguishing between selling and networking, how networking works and the importance of effective communication in networking.

Networking Skills - (full day workshop) - 5 PD credits

This one-day session is designed to help participants learn how to build and maintain relationships with potential contacts who can help them grow their business. At the end of the session, the participant will be able to distinguish between networking and selling and appreciate the benefits and work involved in networking. As well, feel comfortable and confident meeting and chatting with strangers and potential clients, including lenders, mortgage brokers, real estate brokers and builders in large-group events
